So loyal readers it’s time for another one of my weekly…ummm bi-momthyish column. This edition I try to make the point why DC should be at Gen Con this year, and because of their absence I will spend my time failing at trying to hit on female cos-players.
This is the part where I should say, this following piece doesn’t reflect the views or opinions of Gotham Knights Online, and barely the person who wrote it.
So this week I head to Gen Con (thanks to a media badge), which bills it’s self as the best four days in gamming, I have never been to any other four days in gamming so I am inclined to agree. While this convention is strictly gamming, such as role playing games, card games, video games etc. I can’t help but think this is a missed opportunity for DC Comics as well as other comic companies.
DC is trying to push this new 52 on its readers and it says it wants to bring back or even bring new readers in. Well then why not leave the safety of a SDCC, Dragon Con or some other major comic book related convention, for something that doesn’t feature comic books? This convention will be packed with gamers, but do all those gamers read comic books? No doubt there will be attendees who read comic books, but aren’t sold on the whole idea of the new 52, or even read DC Comics. This is the best place to try and get new readers in or bring back some old readers.
DC already tried to sell this on the west coast and did a good job doing it, a lot of people I talked to said they were convinced on the new concept. But what about the Midwest, shouldn’t DC at least make a small showing here? Yes there is C2E2 in Chicago, (Gen Con is located in Indianapolis, which is three hours driving time, five if you drive like my mother) but that is not until the spring, Gen Con is now a month before the relaunch, DC should be here!
If DC was to show up, it doesn’t have to be much, no panels, Dan DiDio doesn’t have to take crap from people over not having Wally West in the new books, maybe just a booth with some information. If they are so inclined have a small panel there taking questions, and have someone available to the press (me) to interview for a few minutes.
This can be the same for whatever Marvel has in their latest Spiderman’s war with The Fantastic Four story line, (I don’t read Marvel with the exception of Captain America, which I just started) or any other comic book company.
On a personal level, I am not a gamer, so it would be nice to see something comic book related there. Since there is not I will be spending my time going to a couple historical lectures, trying to avoid the creepy people who just come up to you and talk to you for no real reason, and fail horribly trying to hit on some girl dressed as Poison Ivy, or Harley Quinn.
I am not putting down DC, they have too much of my money for me to want to do that, all I am saying is it wouldn’t hurt to expand their reach.
As always I welcome your hate mail or if you are so inclined: your thoughts or opinions on this subject, and if you want to tell me you liked reading this or not, that’s ok too.
