Giffen, DeMatteis, Macguire to Reunite for “Justice League 3000″ Series

DC Comics has confirmed that the team responsible for the 1986 relaunch of the Justice League series, Keith Giffen, JM DeMatteis, and Kevin Macguire, are reuniting once again for a new ongoing Justice League series this fall: Justice League 3000.

As reported by Comic Book Resources, the trio are heading this all-new series which will feature brand new and future design versions of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and The Flash, by artist Howard Porter. From the sketches revealed by DC Comics, it certainly indicates that this iteration of the League, one thousand years hence, will be of a far more militaristic and battle-hardened tone. Further information as to whether this title will be part of DC’s Fifth Wave of New 52 titles expected this October or if it will be a separate entity has not been revealed at this time.

Christy Marx talks Birds of Prey

Writer Christy Marx talks about her book Birds of Prey to CBR:

“To be honest, I haven’t thought that much about them being outlaws. In my mind, they’re heroes who happen to operate out on the fringes,” Marx told CBR News. “It’s an interesting mix because you have two people with super powers, one person with no powers but a brilliant mind, and one person who’s been made into something that is both more and less than human. And yet they’re friends and teammates who need to utterly trust and depend on one another. I would say that I see them as outsiders who are trying to do the right thing in a thankless situation.”

While Marx’s first storyline incorporated Batman villain Mister Freeze, according to the writer the decision to kick off her run with the coldest of Batman’s rogues was less by choice and more by design — literally, in this case.

Writer Ann Nocenti talks about her upcoming special on Joker’s Daughter:

CBR News: The first of your two one-shots involves a villain who readers know only as the Joker’s Daughter. We touched on her a little bit the last time we spoke about “Catwoman,” but as the writer of her one-shot how do you define Joker’s Daughter? Is she actually related to Joker, or the pre-New 52 character of the same name?

Ann Nocenti: Those are questions I can’t answer because it’s all wrapped up in lots of surprises. I’ve been enjoying how DC is rolling out the mystery and I’ve always felt from the fan perspective I don’t want spoilers!

Then let’s talk about the concept in general. Last time we spoke you called Joker’s Daughter the “inverted funhouse idea of beauty.” How did you come to the idea of anorexia and twisted beauty as fundamental to this character?

They sent me a picture of her! [Laughs] I didn’t create this character, so that was the first thing I thought — “Wow, this [image] really reminds me of it.” To me there’s something that’s beautiful about ugly and ugly about beautiful. She’s got this incredible sass to her stance and the way she’s holding her body. She’s very proud of her ugliness, so you start to think about stuff like anorexia and girls who think they can never get thin enough, and you also think of the images in “Vogue” magazine. I don’t know if you remember this but there was this thing in fashion called “heroin-chic.”

Yes, with Kate Moss back in the 1990s.

It was models who looked like they had been junkies for years. They had black eyes and looked sickly and were photographed leaned back in opium den-looking things. There was something very gorgeous about this decrepit Goth interpretation of beauty. It’s profound because beauty is fleeting; there is this aspect that people want to freeze beauty at its peak, but it’s never going to happen. I like that she has her sexiness to her and power to her through not being anyone’s beauty ideal, which was the first thing I started thinking about.

And when we’re talking about comics most superheroes are drawn as very attractive and conventional looking people while villains are either ugly or have brought that attractive ideal so far around they’ve twisted it around back to horror.

Exactly! Even the real world, you look at Napoleon or the history of real villains, they had this charisma or magnetism they developed despite what they looked like. I just could feel from the way she was drawn that she had these inner resources that went beyond a normal young girl.

During the PlayStation event at E3, Sony’s Jack Tretton announced Batman: Arkham Origins would get some exclusive content on PS3 themed around the Knightfall storyline. In addition to that, a 1960s Batman skin will also be available on PS3.

Zero Year to Feature Tie-In Issues

Scott Snyder told the New York Post that their will be tie-in issues in Novemember for upcoming story arc Zero Year:

I was writing it as a singular story and some of other writers asked with the Bat-characters in particular, if they might be able to show where their characters were during this kind of seminal moment in the story, when Gotham is at a very dangerous moment,” Snyder told Parallel Worlds.

“And so I said, ‘Look, if you guys want to do it, you know, we’re all friends, I’m not gonna say no,’” he said. “So there will be some tie-ins with some of the books you would expect.
“I’m really, really happy that they wanted to do it just because we are really close, all of us working on the Batbooks and it’s fun when they say ‘We’d like to tie in and show where our characters are’ … I’ll never say no to that when they ask.

“This is an opportunity for them to show where their character is … and to give you a secret moment from the history of that character that you might not have seen before,” Snyder said.
